Like many children Richard often climbed trees as a child and at the age of 13 started climbing rock faces. After spending many years climbing rocks around the world Richard changed his attention to climbing trees using ropes and harnesses. He went to work for a large arboricultural contractor in the Midlands where he worked his way up from ground staff to climber and finally a team leader.
